Chart of the Day: Gallon of Gas

Chart illustrating the components that make up the price of a gallon of gas.

Contents

Today’s Chart of the Day is from the US Energy Information Administration, which is part of the US Department of Energy. The chart shows the percentage of each component that goes into determining the price of a gallon of gas or diesel.

Today, we're focusing on gas prices, where the largest portion at 52% comes from crude oil. The remaining costs are evenly split, with 16% each allocated to refining, marketing & distribution, and taxes.

The website also charts the history of gas prices which shows that we currently pay approximately $3 a gallon, which aligns with the $3 average going all the way back to 2005 and well off the peak of $5 we paid three years ago.
