Donut chart showing percentage of when retirees exited the workplace

Contents

Today’s Chart of the Day is from Yahoo Finance showing when retirees exited the workforce. A shocking chart showing that 58% of workers retire sooner than planned due to health issues, downsizing, or having to care for family members.

The article accompanying the chart noted that 62 is the average age of retirement and there is an increasing trend to “partially” retire, which now makes up 53% of retired workers. "Partially" retiring means going part-time at your current employer, getting a part-time job in a new company, or working on side hustles such as online sales or for the gig economy for companies like Uber.

The takeaway: Don’t assume that things will go smoothly as you get closer to retirement and plan accordingly.
