Chart of the Day: How Long Will It Last?

Image of a house with each component's (roof, stove, flooring, etc.) broken down by its life expectancy.

Contents

Today’s Chart of the Day is from the National Association of Home Builders showing the life expectancy of parts and systems in your home.

According to the illustration, the longest lasting component in your home is the toilet, which came in with a "lifetime" life expectancy; the component with the second longest life expectancy is wood or stone flooring at 100 years. The items with the shortest life expectancies are the smoke detector and kitchen sink, which are expected to only last 5-10 years.

Since houses physically depreciate, this reminds me of the adage: "When real estate appreciates, your house price didn’t go up, the land underneath it did.”
