Chart of the Day: Trust in Media

Line graph illustrating Americans' trust in newspapers (blue line) and TV news (black line) from 1973 to 2023.

Contents

Today’s Chart of the Day is from Gallup and shows Americans' trust, or lack of, in mainstream media over the past 50 years.

Quite simply, it is not a healthy trend. Americans' confidence in newspapers peaked at 50% in 1980 and is at a dismal 15% today. Similarly, the American trust in TV news has also fallen from a peak of 45% in 1995, to an even worse 10% today.

Can the media change directions to improve? Or is the trend on track to continue, potentially, to (an impossible?) zero.
