Stacked bar graph showing the value of various retirement assets from 2000 to Q! 2025.

Contents

Today's Chart of the Day, from Arbor Data Science using data from Investment Company Institute, shows the value of the assets that make up the retirement market, from 2000 through Q1 2025.

The overall value of retirement assets has grown significantly over time, with steady increases across all major plan types. Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and defined contribution (DC) plans make up the largest share, while defined benefit (DB) plans from both government and private sectors remain important but less prevalent. Annuity reserves contribute the least but show consistent presence.

The overall trend reflects strong growth in retirement savings, driven by higher contributions and market performance.
