A Love That's Still Dancing

Lake Placid, Fla., June 10, 2026 — For Paul and Carolyn Phypers, one dance led to a partnership that has spanned more than six decades.

The couple, married for 67 years, first met in California, where Paul Phypers was stationed as a Marine at El Toro and Carolyn Phypers worked as a hostess. One Friday night, they found themselves on the same dance floor — the start of a partnership that has never missed a step.

“We danced that night, and we’ve been dancing ever since,” Paul Phypers said.

They were married March 1, 1959, and have built a life centered on family, hard work and a deep connection to their community.

Today, all six of their children live nearby, a reflection of the close-knit family they created over the decades.

The Phypers’ story is closely tied to Lake Placid. Over the years, they have watched the town grow and change while remaining a constant presence themselves. They spent years working side by side in agriculture, contributing to an industry that helped shape the region. Their work included a connection to caladiums, an iconic symbol of Lake Placid.

A recent visit to Crews Bank & Trust brought an unexpected reminder of their history.

While standing near the teller line, Phypers noticed a familiar image on display — a print of Carolyn from the 1960s. He recognized it immediately because he has the same photo at home as a postcard. When he asked about it, the teller offered to have a copy printed for them.

For the couple, the moment served as a reminder of just how deeply their lives are rooted in the community — not only in memories, but in the places and institutions they helped shape.

Through the years, one thing has remained unchanged: their commitment to each other. From that first dance to more than six decades of marriage, the Phypers’ story is a testament to enduring love and the simple moments that grow into something lasting.

“Paul and Carolyn’s story is a beautiful reminder of what makes Lake Placid special — deep roots, lasting relationships and a strong sense of community,” said Rob Roberts, Crews Bank & Trust area president for Highlands County. “At Crews Bank & Trust, our purpose is to build relationships that span generations, and we’re honored to help preserve and share a small piece of their history.”

The image is on display at Crews Bank & Trust, 102 E. Interlake Blvd., Lake Placid.
