Chart of the Day: Less and Less Shares Since 1999

blue bar graph from 1999 - 2024

Contents

Today’s Chart of the Day is from the Financial Times with a note from Callum Thomas. The chart shows that there is a shrinking level of publicly held stocks. Why so? This is a result of companies buying back their stock, which removes the shares from the market, and, as shown, a trend of less and less new shares being issued. We will continue to monitor the trend as this could have a large impact for future stock market investors.
