Today’s Chart of the Day from JP Morgan shows that as of May 15, 2025, the average retail investor is underperforming the market by 2%. This continues the trend of a 17% underperformance in 2024, and overall, underperformance in nine of the last ten years. The main causes of underperforming continue to be panic selling, hesitation to buy, insufficient diversification, paying overly high fees, and, in the end, a simple failure to create a plan and stick with it.
