Chart of the Day: Life is Longer

Line graph illustrating the average increase in life expectancy, from 1900 to 2023.

Contents

Today’s Chart of the Day is from Our World in Data showing that the global average life expectancy went from 32 years in 1900 to 73 years as of 2023.

Good news of course, but most of the increase is due to better medical care and the significant drop in infant mortality. The bad news is that if you exclude infant mortality, the average life expectancy only rose by about five years.
