Today’s Chart of the Day explores findings from Visa's The great wealth transfer reality check, highlighting how mortgage debt among retirees has changed over the past three decades.

Comparing data from 1989 to the 2020s, the share of adults ages 65-79 carrying mortgage debt has nearly doubled. The increase is even more dramatic for those age 80 and older, where the percentage of homeowners with a mortgage is roughly ten times higher than it was 33 years ago.

These trends likely reflect a combination of rising home prices, longer mortgage terms, and increased refinancing activity.
