Chart of the Day - Tooth Fairy Payout

Area chart showing the Tooth Fairy payouts from 2001 to 2025

Contents

Today’s Chart of the Day is from Delta Dental and shows the average Tooth Fairy payout per lost tooth since 2001. A tongue in cheek survey but also used by some as a gauge for the state of the economy and inflation.

Notice payouts jump from time to time as it goes from one even dollar amount to another. For example, from $2 to $4, then to the high of $6 and back down to the current $5, as not too many Tooth Fairies carry loose change.

I called my mother, who knew my Tooth Fairy on a first name basis, to ask how much I used to receive. She said, "A dollar, as your Tooth Fairy was very generous."
