Today’s Chart of the Day, “We Don’t Have to Give in to the Smartphones,” is from a New York Times article. It presents data to a Harris Poll question asking parents, “When I think about my child’s experience growing up, I wish _____ had never been invented.”

The article goes on to note:

  • Teenagers use social media on an average of five hours a day.
  • The average age of receiving one's first smart phone is 12-years old.
  • Many young adults in their mid-20’s feel they were given smartphones too early.
  • 65% of parents support phone-free schools.
Reflecting on this, I’m reminded of the 1950s–60s science fiction I’ve read. Many of those stories predicted technological advancements that have since come true. Yet, one reoccurring theme remains: the idea of a “post-technology” revolution where we recognize that we may have gone too far with our innovations.
