The chart highlights the spend on healthcare in purple, which went from a mere 2% in 1929 to 25% in 2024, and is now greater than the spend on groceries or housing. A trend that is positive, if the funds are spent thoughtfully and allow people to live healthier, longer lives, but troubling if the spending is done inefficiently and fails to deliver meaningful health outcomes.
