Today’s Chart of the Day pulls data from several sources to show what it really takes to become the average millionaire.

It’s easy to think most millionaires were born with a big advantage, and some certainly were. But the reality is that 80% of millionaires are self-made.

The biggest takeaway is that building wealth takes time. The average person doesn’t hit the million-dollar mark until around age 50, and it takes about 28 years to earn that first million. In other words, becoming a millionaire is usually less about getting lucky and more about staying consistent over the long haul.
